Pakistan bids Peter farewell !!

Amid mixed emotions, the colleagues of FNF, Pakistan office, FreedomGaters and friends of the foundation bade Mr. Peter-Andreas Bochmann farewell on the eve of 2nd August at Marriott Hotel, Islamabad. At this occasion, veteran politicians foundation has worked with, representatives of the partner organizations shared their pleasant memories of years long acquaintance and working with Mr. Bochmann, more lovingly known as Peter amongst his friends. They appreciated his easy- going friendly attitude of handling complex issues especially while dealing with intricacies of Pakistani politics.
Cherishing the memories of his stay in Pakistan, Mr. Bochmann thanked his counterparts in the partner organizations and colleagues for being supportive and helpful throughout. The ceremony was also attended by Mr. Manfred Richter, Member of the Board of Directors of FNF and Dr René Klaff, Regional Director, FNSt South Asia. Mr. Bochmann would leave for Bulgaria to assume his duties as Resident Representative on 22nd August 2008.
While being based in Sofia, he will be in charge of four countries of the region namely Bulgaria, Romania, Macedonia and Moldova. Unlike the work in Pakistan, these countries already have established liberal political parties which are the main partners of the Foundation.
The Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit started its work in the region in 1991, shortly after the fall of the Iron Curtain in Central and Eastern Europe. Since then a lot of things were achieved: democratic pluralistic political systems were established; the human and civil rights are respected; Bulgaria and Romania are already members of NATO and the European Union; the partner liberal parties in Bulgaria and Romania are engaged in the governments of both countries. This development is also an evidence for the success of the Foundation and of its long lasting cooperation with liberal parties, think tanks and personalities. Now the Foundation’s work in all four countries is focused on the strengthening of the liberal partner parties and the deepening of the political dialogue in the region and beyond.
This clearly shows the change of the working environment and challenges than that of South Asia where the seed of Liberalism has just been sown and needs patience of years to witness its growth before coming to full bloom.
He would assume his duties from November after the preparatory period of two months at the Headquarters in Germany.
